welcome to the united socialist states of really whiny emo.
life is good. i don't have to work a double today...yesterday was dead, and another waitress with no shift today wanted my 11am shift...so i was more than happy to give it to her.

last night i went out after work...didn't get home until about 4am, and i think i'm still not quite all the way from drunk to hung over. i met one of the other waitresses at leona's up at this north side bar called duffy's...she goes there every sunday night. it was a great time just chilling, chatting, and drinking with her, although it was uber-busy because it's memorial day weekend. usually they have karaoke...which means i have to go back there with her another sunday night to sing.

after duffy's closed, we went to yak-zies, a four a.m. bar right down the road. they have an awesome jukebox, one of those internet ones, that we completely raided when we got there. we ran around that bar for a while...and i have the strangest story. i'm there, and some random guy walks up to me and the girl i was hanging out with. apparently he knew her from seeing her at that bar before. then, he looks at me, and is like...hey, you're candacejuliana! that was weird...that meant he was somehow associated with mock trial (candacejuliana is my perjuries.com user name), but i didn't recognize him right off the bat. he was initially reluctant to share his identity and affiliation, but finally he told me he was a coach from lewis. we talked mock for a while, the three of us took a couple of shots, and then me and my friend left the bar...but it was funny meeting another person associated with the wacky world of mock.

total change of topic...i wish i could still sleep. i hope i get a nap between now and 4:30 when i have to go work.

Sunday, May 29, 2005

well...it's been since my last post that i've even been on the computer, but things are looking up. i got someone to cover my shift yesterday, so i didn't have to work at all...and i got to go to my friend's party.

it's been a good weekend. friday night was the barbecue, which involved lots of beer, lots of meat, and lots of hanging out with my friends. it was a really, really good drunken idea my friend had to do that barbecue.

yesterday i was sitting around...but then i got really bored around 1 o'clock, so i hopped on the cta with no destination in mind. i realised i hadn't taken the westbound blue line past racine, ever, so i hopped on the cermak branch and took it to the end of the line. there wasn't much there (it was in suburbia...berwyn...), so i hopped on a bus further west to a mall that was there. it was a dead ringer for crabtree, the mall where i shopped as a kid...so i felt like i was twelve again, without the pesky parents there to bug me. it was a strange, ironic little afternoon...but i did some good cd buying. i found dead letters, the rasmus' album, for ten bucks, so i picked it up...it's good stuff. i had only heard two songs before i bought it...but since they were both good in completely different ways, i decided the cd was a good gamble. it's one that in fact paid off. then, at the used cd store, i picked up disclaimer II by seether (i had the original disclaimer, but i lost it...decided i may as well get the one with extra songs. now i just need to get their new album that came out last week...) and i got blurring the edges by meredith brooks (it was THREE DOLLARS...and i was singing "i need" to myself a couple days ago). then i went home, had dinner with some friends, and we skipped on to the birthday party. the party was lots of fun...lots of random people, lots of beer, drunk fun times. i'm so glad i got someone to cover my shift so i could go.

today i woke up at noon...it was beautiful. i got lots of sleep, and since i was smart enough to ingest a cocktail of food, water, and ibuprofen before i hit the hay last night, i didn't have a hangover. i went to the med for lunch with one of my friends...and now i'm killing time before i go to work. i have a shift at 4:30...and i despise working on sundays. it's always really busy, but no one tips you for anything. the stingiest people ever go out to eat on sundays. and then tomorrow...i have my double shift. it could either be really good...i.e. kind of busy, with people tipping me well because they feel sorry that i must work on a holiday...or it could be really bad, where i have five tables all day because people want to cook out instead of eat out. we'll see.

all my roommates are starting to pack up all their stuff. i haven't started doing that yet, although i have to move june 13th. i finally put some stuff for sale on marketplace though...hopefully people will buy it from me, and i'll make some money. i also need to go through all my stuff with a fine-toothed comb, discard everything i absolutely don't need...because whatever is going with me to st. louis is going with me to my sublet, and that's it.

74 hours left to slog through until i'm off for the weekend.

Friday, May 27, 2005

i'm still having a rotten week. i'm exhausted. i still haven't gotten anyone to take my saturday shift...they gave me a lunch and a dinner on saturday, i told the manager i could work the lunch and not the dinner, and lo and behold...he pawned off my lunch shift and kept me with my dinner. if i don't get anyone to take that shift, i can't go to my friend's birthday party tomorrow. i'm bitter about my job at leona's for that and various other reasons, related to either the schedule or my awful, horrible double shift on wednesday. the library hasn't been going badly...but it's cutting into what would otherwise be sleep time, and that's awful.

i'm grumpy, i'm pissed-off, and i don't know how much more of this i can take. i need to figure out how to survive from now until wednesday...6:30 on wednesday, life will be good because i'll be on a bus to st. louis. until then, though...it's work work work all day every day.

"full colour guilt"
by boysetsfire

ideals of beauty set to color
in savvy death camp chic
the runways turn to gauntlets of disgrace and sickness
for your spectacle your piece

her hollow eyes now give you anything
she never saw it coming anyway

acceptance is the starving girl that you created
bleeding your disease
for images of tragedy that you take pride in
to make her feel ashamed

her hollow eyes now give you anything
she never saw it coming anyway

articles will not redeem
the dead now lying at your feet
you know she doesn’t matter so don’t act so coy
she’s starving for you
did you even notice what you took

her hollow eyes now give you anything
she never saw it coming anyway
i'm even more exhausted than a few days ago, even more ready to kill everyone...but at least i'm going to st. louis next weekend. i need that.

Tuesday, May 24, 2005

ugghhhh...this is awful. i'm really not looking forward to seeing the schedule for this week. it's been...yesterday afternoon and today...that i've found out all the fun things my friends are planning for this weekend--and it was too late to factor them into my schedule request at leona's, since that was due yesterday morning. thus, i'm fully liable to be working on friday during the barbecue, and/or on saturday during the party. if i get scheduled, which i'm sure i will because the world really, really hates me this week (i've been really really sour these last couple days...humanity would be best served staying away from me right now), i'm going to try and get off work...but who knows how that's going to work out anyway...

in other words, ignore me. i've been up since 6:30, i'm in the midst of working a 14+ hour day, i didn't get to talk to my boyfriend last night, and i'm in a really bad mood. i swear, i'm going to kill the first dumb customer who tries to piss me off tonight.
yesterday we had a mockball game against the law school. it was fun to play in, although had more of a detrimental effect on my self-esteem than it logically should have. i pitched...i'm no good at pitching, and of course i gave up 24 runs (we lost 24-2.) also, i'm the only idiot who managed to strike out at all...and i struck out twice. (okay, the last out, they gave me six strikes until i flied out...but you get the point.) i also didn't competently field a ball that came out to the pitcher all day. in other words...i'm not very good at my job.

Monday, May 23, 2005

it was wonderful finally being able to see my boyfriend again. :) i hadn't seen him since des moines, a month and a half or so ago, and he came into town this weekend for the mock trial cocktail party and other assorted randomness. it was 48 hours that went by way, way, way too fast...i really can't wait until i move to st. louis, so i can see him all the time, so i can sleep next to him whenever i want, so i don't have to always say goodbye almost as soon as i've said hello.

two more months.

a few things...

--tuesday night sucked. first of all, they only gave me three shifts next week. at least they gave me off tomorrow and saturday, when my boyfriend will be in town, but they also gave me off tonight and tuesday. that's just not enough shifts. secondly, i had a 4:30 shift at leona's, so i got there around 3:45 in hopes of being the first 4:30 there....first in, first cut, first to go home. i wasn't first, but i was second of three. that wasn't so bad...until the waitress who rolled in at 4:29 for her 4:30 was sick, and asked me if she could get cut before me. i'm also sick, but she was sicker...so because i'm not a complete jerk, i said sure...why not. she and the first 4:30 got cut at 8:30...and then the restaurant got busy. i made a lot of money...but i didn't get to leave until close. that's right...i was so tired, i had deliberately tried to get cut early...and i had to work 4:30 to close. normally it's 6:30 people that close. that was awful...and to add insult to injury, i had to open the restaurant the next morning.

--yesterday, on the other hand, did not suck. after work, i went out shopping with laura and kat. my goal for the day was to find cute shoes for the mock trial cocktail tomorrow night...and i found some shiny, semi-open-toed pumps at dsw (the huge shoe store at clark and belmont). i also got way too much cute lingerie...then again, i guess if you let me, laura, and kat loose in the lingerie department, we will buy lots of stuff.

--while we were out at dinner last night...it was me, kat, laura, and a friend of kat's who had apparently been involved in debate. in discussing mock trialers' propensity for mockcest, laura made an extremely acute observation...that mock trialers are the drama queens of the speech-event world. i couldn't agree more.

--it was strange...i was at work one day this week (i think it was tuesday, but i don't really remember), and a table asked me where my accent was from. i explained that i grew up in north carolina, have lived here in chicago for five years, and picked up my short a in the summer of 2001, after i had lived here a year. then they said that their hypothesis for where i was from was all wrong...because they apparently knew someone who looked like me...and sounded like me...from southern illinois. no one had ever guessed that as my origin before.

--"buried a lie" by senses fail is the weirdest song i've heard in a long time. i can never decide if i like it or not...the end of it gets kind of musically out-there, and not in a good way (more in a bad-outro-to-an-emo-song kind of way), but the rest of it is musically pleasing to me...although the lyrics always make me wonder--what the heck is this, and what would move anyone to write them??? i mean...i get that it's probably about someone who refuses to believe his friend's death is a suicide, but it's a very strange, almost necrophiliac way to put it. anyway...lyrics here to read and be confused by.

"buried a lie"
by senses fail

rest in peace girl
your death is such a shame
the paper said a bullet got in your way
but i smell foul play
possible poisoning
i had to bring you in for questioning
i went to your grave
dug up your body
brought it to my house where you lay

so let's play doctor babe
we'll operate today
incisions must be made
you could help solve this case
for me

i headed downtown to share what i had found
it's not a suicide it's a crime
i have a witness
it's clearly evident
there had to be someone else present
at the time of death poisons in stomach
how could she pull it if she's dead

so let's play doctor babe
we'll operate today
incisions must be made
you could help solve this case
we need a scalpel now
under white lights you lay
we've got to hurry up
before the flesh decays

i'll catch the murderer
and send him away
i'll get the evidence
from your last day
your last day

so let's play doctor babe
we'll operate today
incisions must be made
you could help solve this case
we need a scalpel now
under white lights you lay
we've got to hurry up
before the flesh decays

i'm so sleepy...i was awake until 3:30 last night. it was great (or, at least, from 12:30, when i got off of work, until 3:30, when i slept, it was great...), but now i'm sleeeeepy.

and i have to work both my jobs today.

at least tomorrow, i open at leona's, get off midafternoon, and then i get to go shopping with silly mocker girlies. :D yay!!!!

Monday, May 16, 2005

he's right...the mock trial cocktail is the perfect excuse to wear That Dress. :)

i'll be the prettiest girl there, and i'll be there with the sexiest guy ever. never mind that i'll probably be way overdressed...it'll be fun.

Friday, May 13, 2005

--i don't know whether to laugh or cry...i've been barcoding books in the basement of harper library for the last nine months...and two days ago they decided to discard all of the books that are down there. thus, the last nine months of work have been for naught. it's hilarious that they're so stupid, since they should have decided to discard the books BEFORE making me do that for nine months...but on principle i'm really, really pissed off.

--Sklansky's Stupid System is awesome. i played a poker tourney last night using it (it's not actually called Stupid System, but that's what my boyfriend and i call it because it's a mathematical, mechanical system that David Sklansky devised for a casino owner's daughter who didn't know how to play poker to use in the world series...) it's basically a series of math steps that tell you to do one of two things preflop: All In or Fold. it's pretty boring to play, because you just crunch numbers, and end up having to stay out of most pots , but it's funny to sometimes drive people nuts because they want to play, but can't call an all in. i didn't win the tournament...but the Stupid System stole me enough blinds (and won me one big enough pot) to be good enough for fifth place--so i got my money back. it was silly.

--14 plus hour workdays suck. i had them monday and tuesday, and i've got another one today...work at the library from 9-5, and then 6:30 to close at leona's. that's what i get for having to make up my hours from last week at the library this week...but still, it sucks. at least next week i'm back down to just 15 hours at the library...and i have some double-job days monday and tuesday, but five hours at the library instead of eight. if i can make it to next friday...then my boyfriend is coming for the mock trial cocktail. :) i haven't seen him since des moines, so it will be wonderful to finally see him again.

--and, mel has it right...if you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge the schwab.

01. Reply with your name and I will write something I like about you.
02. I will then tell what song/movie/icon reminds me of you.
03. If I were to apply an o'clock to you, it would be...
04. I will try to name a single word that best describes you.
05. I'll tell you the most memorable moment I've had with you.
06. I will tell you what animal you remind me of.
07. I'll then tell you something that I've always wondered about you.
08. Put this in your journal.

these answers are from Kevin.

1. You're a total bitch when there's something you want. That's cool.
2. Pink - Just Like a Pill. (Notice I didn't go with the song about loathing from "Wicked.")
3. 6 P.M., as that is when mock starts.
4. Butch.
5. Fourth round at nationals 2002. We had mojo that round.
6. Goat. (Obvious, but still...)
7. Whatever happened to the whole commie hippie pinko thing? Was it just being a first year and making a new identity for yourself or are you still a commie hippie pinko, but SDS was full of irritating people?

as for the answer to question 7...it's the latter. my political views haven't really changed since my first year...i'm still a firm believer in socialism, and have been since before college. but, the people in the group really pissed me off. you know how there are a lot of famously closed-minded people on the right wing? they exist on the left wing too, and there are a lot of them at the U of C campus. it's really funny...this particular phenomenon, and my choice to leave the groups because i didn't find them to be very open fora for political debate, is what i wrote my law school personal statement about.

Wednesday, May 11, 2005

yesterday at Leona's was the day from hell.

i have to work at the library all day thursday and friday, so i signed up for dinner shifts those two days.

friday they gave me a lunch, and now because THEY are stupid, i have to try and find someone to cover it.

one of the busboys has a tendency of sneaking up behind servers and grabbing their shoulders, grabbing their waists...that kind of thing. i about killed him yesterday since i was already in a foul mood about the scheduling.

most of my tables were alright...but i had a table give me just a dollar or two on a thirty-some dollar bill yesterday.

i have to go back there in 40 minutes.

i really don't want to. here's hoping i get cut early so i can go hang out with my friends, and forget about work for a while.

Tuesday, May 10, 2005

apparently, a woman in north carolina was fired from her job for living with her boyfriend.

apparently cohabitation is still illegal in seven states.

the government should have better things to do than regulate stuff like this.

besides, how the heck do you know what you're getting into living with a spouse Till Death Do You Part unless you've lived with them before?

cohabitation is good, and this law is stupid.

lessons i learned during ScavHunt, 2005...

--louis perwien (of louis goes to jail fame) is still the Stupidest Person Ever.
--scavvies should always wear their skivvies. you never know when there's going to be an event that only requires partial nudity, but accidentally results in (almost) full nudity.
--Meat Loaf is the god of sex, drugs, and rock and roll.
--Harold and Kumar were not only really, really high, they were also insane.
--after 5 or 10 sliders, PBR tastes like divine nectar.
--hacking at a three year old block of brown sugar with an ice pick is immensely satisfying.
--ye olde spin, sit, and hug: judges love it, scavvies hate it.
--page captains are overrated. teams function better without them.
--yes, they do sell orange fanta at the c-shop.
--shorelanders are really, really, really good at eating pies really, really really fast.
--there's nothing like an accurate trebuchet.
--the ratio of churches to chicken shacks in hyde park is 8:1 (or 32:4).
--almost every team has their own shirts...shoreland is the only team cool enough to have team shot glasses.

i love scavhunt, and shoreland is the greatest team ever!!! :)
okay...today is meme day. tomorrow won't be. i promise.

You are 28% Rational, 85% Extroverted, 42% Brutal, and 0% Arrogant.

You are the Hippie! Characterized by a strong sense of extroversion,
irrationality, gentleness, and humility, you no doubt frolic through
fields preaching peace and love to all! You are probably either very
spiritual or needlessly paranoid about "the man", like most hippies, as
a result of your focus on intuition and feelings over cold, brutal
logic. You are also very, very social. And like any hippie, who would
have no qualms about hitchiking across the country just to meet some
interesting people, you too love to interact with others, even complete
strangers. Because we know most any hippie is peace-loving and humble,
it stands to reason that you, as well, are terribly gentle and humble,
almost to the point of revulsion. Your carefree attitude of peace and
harmony is probably very, very sickening to realists or cynics or
anyone who isn't a hippie, to tell the truth. In short, your
personality is defective because you are overly emotional, extroverted,
gentle, and humble--thus making you an annoying hippie. And you listen
to psychadelic rock and smoke a whole lot of pot. Okay, maybe not, but
I wouldn't be surprised if you did.

To put it less negatively:

1. You are more INTUITIVE than rational.

2. You are more EXTROVERTED than introverted.

3. You are more GENTLE than brutal.

4. You are more HUMBLE than arrogant.

Your exact opposite is the Sociopath.

Other personalities you would probably get along with are the Hand-Raiser, the Televangelist, and the Robot.

If you scored near fifty percent for a certain trait (42%-58%), you
could very well go either way. For example, someone with 42%
Extroversion is slightly leaning towards being an introvert, but is
close enough to being an extrovert to be classified that way as well.
Below is a list of the other personality types so that you can
determine which other possible categories you may fill if you scored
near fifty percent for certain traits.

The other personality types:

The Emo Kid: Intuitive, Introverted, Gentle, Humble.

The Starving Artist: Intuitive, Introverted, Gentle, Arrogant.

The Bitch-Slap: Intuitive, Introverted, Brutal, Humble.

The Brute: Intuitive, Introverted, Brutal, Arrogant.

The Hippie: Intuitive, Extroverted, Gentle, Humble.

The Televangelist: Intuitive, Extroverted, Gentle, Arrogant.

The Schoolyard Bully: Intuitive, Extroverted, Brutal, Humble.

The Class Clown: Intuitive, Extroverted, Brutal, Arrogant.

The Robot: Rational, Introverted, Gentle, Humble.

The Haughty Intellectual: Rational, Introverted, Gentle, Arrogant.

The Spiteful Loner: Rational, Introverted, Brutal, Humble.

The Sociopath: Rational, Introverted, Brutal, Arrogant.

The Hand-Raiser: Rational, Extroverted, Gentle, Humble.

The Braggart: Rational, Extroverted, Gentle, Arrogant.

The Capitalist Pig: Rational, Extroverted, Brutal, Humble.

The Smartass: Rational, Extroverted, Brutal, Arrogant.

Leave a comment, and I will generate 5 questions for you. Post the answers in your live journal and make questions for other people. Mine are from foofy_attorney...otherwise known as kevin.

1. If you got to add a secretary to the Cabinet and you got to be that secretary, what department would you add?

hmmm...this is difficult. i can't decide whether to go for something serious or something fun. i think i'd create the department of separation between religion and state...and probably piss off a lot of people because i'd be in charge of making sure the government stays as secular as possible. i'm cool with people contributing their own time, money, and energy to religious pursuits...but as soon as it gets anywhere near the government, it'd be up to me to say no way. i know this is something i *should* trust to other people...but frankly, i don't...especially under the bush administration.

2. What is your favorite kind of beer?

guinness. that was easy...my goodness, i love my guinness.

3. What game show would you most like to appear on?

wow, this is a good one since i'm such a game show addict...but i'd go on jeopardy. i'd be able to put my trivia knowledge to good use, win lots of money, and be a minor nerd celebrity.

4. What was the last movie you managed not to fall asleep in?

i watched "the good girl" on TV on sunday night...from beginning to end, and managed not to fall asleep at all. i had seen that movie when it came out in the theatres...i loved it then, and it was just as good the second time.

5. What is your favorite book not written by Dostoyevsky?

"the dollmaker" by harriette arnow...i haven't read it since high school, and i loved it then. i need to read it again...it's an amazing tale of a strong woman and a strong family trying to make it in the slums during world war II. i love the main character so much...she has a lot more honour, energy, and ability than i ever will.
this court should be shamed--suggesting that a woman marry the man who raped her in exchange for giving him a lighter sentence is an act of someone without a conscience. it assumes that she is somehow "his" because he raped her...and that is not something that a court, much less a rapist, should be allowed to assume or to base a decision on.

this man should be shamed--rape is one of the most appalling crimes that one can commit, and beyond that, it is coldhearted, presumptuous, and wrong to think he is doing her a favour by offering to marry her after he raped her. all he's offering to do is try and take possession of her for the rest of her life, and continue to remind her of what he did.

this survivor should be admired for her sanity and her chutzpah--she does not deserve to see this man and be reminded of the most traumatic experience of her life every single day. she deserves to be able to move on, and deserves to see him locked up for the rest of his life.

A rape victim has been asked by an Indian court to consider marrying her attacker to give him a lighter sentence.
The rapist, named Bhura, appeared to suggest his offer of marriage to the 22-year-old victim would be helpful to her.

He told the court in the capital New Delhi he was willing to wed her as "no one would be ready to due to the stigma".
The judge hearing the case ordered the victim, a nurse, and her parents to appear in court to answer to the request.
He said that the attacker's sentence would depend on their answer, and duly sentenced him to life after her response.
The victim said: "I will not marry him. It is horrible, audacious. He should be given the severest punishment.
"He should be hanged so that such an horrendous is not repeated with any other girl."
Bhura raped the woman in September 2003 in a private room at a hospital in Delhi.
The hospital porter gouged her right eye and scarred the nurse's face. She has undergone surgery four times since the attack.
things have gotten interesting. and, i have a funny feeling i know how they're going to turn out. gut instinct is reliable like that.

...on the music meme, alternately for track 12, the breakup song...it's less of a real breakup, but when i kicked stalker boy to the curb after he was stupid enough to tell me he was chasing someone else, i listened to "i'm stupid" by prime sth over and over again.
this is disgusting. a soldier shortage is one thing, but lying to get around standards for soldiers is another. either change the standards to allow more people to join the military, if you need them that badly, or take what you can get. this kid pretended to be a druggie, and they told him how to fake the drug test. he said he was a dropout, and oops, they told him to get a fake diploma.

alright...i'm a sucker for song memes. so, here's another song meme. :)

Track 1: Your favorite song.--"the freshmen" by the verve pipe

Track 2: Your Earliest Memory of A Song--"eight days a week" by the beatles

Track 3: A significant song from childhood- elementary school, let's say.--"down by the riverside"...because i loved to sing it in music class.

Track 4: A significant song from middle school.--"the power of love" by celine dion...yes, i loved celine dion in middle school and ninth grade.

Track 5: Your first kiss or first slow dance, whichever one applies or you choose.--first kiss...i don't remember the name of it, but it's a pink floyd song. i know how it sounds, but i don't know the title of it at all. that guy was such a tool...and i didn't like floyd much anyway, but that's what spoiled floyd once and for all for me.

Track 6: A significant song from high school.--"the background" by third eye blind

Track 7: A song that you sang along to the first time you drove on your own, with the windows down and the wind in your hair and the stereo turned up really loud.--"one man army" by our lady peace

Track 8: Your senior class or senior prom song--"the best of what's around" by dave matthews band (i think that song sucks, but it was our class song all the same...although i voted for "ode" by creed. that one would have been so much better.)

Track 9: An important song from graduation or summer after graduation.--"one man show" by tidewater grain

Track 10: A song from your first year in college.--"no one" by cold

Track 11: A song that reminds you of your first love.--"stitches" by orgy (really, the whole candyass CD does that)

Track 12: The song you listened to after your first real breakup (Come on, admit it. You had one.)--"change the world" by cold (and, really, all of year of the spider by cold and the daredevil soundtrack)

Track 13. A song that you think describes you pretty well during this time period.--"cold" by crossfade

Tracks 14 and Track 15 are songs that are significant towards you.--"kody" by matchbox20 and "swallowtail" by finger eleven
